On 9 April 2018, the Government published its Serious Violence Strategy setting out an ambitious programme of work to respond to increases in knife crime, gun crime and homicide. The Strategy places an emphasis on early intervention and prevention and aims to tackle the root causes of violence and prevent young people from getting involved in crime in the first place. On 13 March, the Chancellor announced a £100m Serious Violence Fund for use during the 19/20 financial year to tackle serious violence. £35m from the Fund has been assigned to establish, or build on existing, Violence Reduction Units (‘VRUs’). The Nottingham OPCC (NOPCC) received £880,000 as one of 18 VRUs across the country, building on successes already seen in Glasgow and London.
