Contract information

Title attributed to the contract: Custody Intervention Project
Description:

On 9 April 2018, the Government published its Serious Violence Strategy setting out an ambitious programme of work to respond to increases in knife crime, gun crime and homicide. The Strategy places an emphasis on early intervention and prevention and aims to tackle the root causes of violence and prevent young people from getting involved in crime in the first place.

On 13 March, the Chancellor announced a £100m Serious Violence Fund for use during the 19/20 financial year to tackle serious violence. £35m from the Fund has been assigned to establish, or build on existing, Violence Reduction Units (‘VRUs’). The Nottingham OPCC (NOPCC) received £880,000 as one of 18 VRUs across the country, building on successes already seen in Glasgow and London.

In implementing the public health approach, VRUs are asked to adopt the World Health Organisation’s definition, as follows:
•	Focused on a defined population;
•	With and for communities;
•	Not constrained by organisational or professional boundaries;
•	Focussed on generating long term as well as short term solutions;
•	Based on data and intelligence to identify the burden on the population, including any inequalities;
•	Rooted in evidence of effectiveness to tackle the problem

In order to contribute to the reduction in serious violence, the PCC seeks individual(s) or organisation(s) who can develop and implement a successful intervention programme in two Nottinghamshire Police custody suites diverting young adults aged 18 – 25 (up to 30 with discretion based on need) who are not in education, employment or training, away from crime with a particular emphasis on those furthest away from engaging with provision. The intervention will involve providing mentoring and coaching and high levels of support and contact with the client.
