Contract information

Title attributed to the contract: T-MJB144-23 Gamma Spectrometer
Description:

The JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) programme has been established within UKAEA to carry out the decommissioning of JET following the cessation of operations in December 2023. Within the JDR programme, the Characterisation project is responsible for the radiological characterisation of JET’s facilities and assets. The Characterisation project plans to commence early sampling of areas from the start of 2024 which will involve the taking of small samples from a wide range of material types and locations across the JET estate and will also be supporting the Sample Retrieval Project, which will be retrieving a small number of JET in-vessel components for analysis. The analysis of these samples is crucial to underpin key strategic decisions for JDR. Gamma spectroscopy will form a vital part of the characterisation process for activated material and therefore UKAEA wishes to expand it’s existing capability on the Culham site.
UKAEA are looking to procure a High-resolution gamma-spectrometer for use by the JDR Characterisation project. The main purpose of the instrument will be to quantify the nuclide activity of small, typically neutron activated samples, ranging in size from 2cm diameter up to 30cm, with the possibility of even larger items such as waste drums sized items. This equipment is key for the analysis of samples taken during the early sampling of JET facilities by the Characterisation team. The equipment will also be used to support the Sample Retrieval Project in the analysis of in-vessel components taken from JET in 2024. It is envisaged that the equipment will be deployed in various locations and as such, it should be portable. Such that early sampling work can progress, the equipment will be required to be operational on-site by the end of FY23/24.
