Appropriate Adult Services - Appropriate Adult Services for the Youth Justice Service

The Sheffield City Council, Children Young People and Families work to develop a collaborative relationship with South Yorkshire Police (SYP), Sheffield Youth Justice Service (YJS), Doncaster YJS, Barnsley YJS and Rotherham YJS for the provision of Appropriate Adult (AA) Services for Children and Vulnerable Adults in Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, and Rotherham. The Sheffield City Council Youth Justice Service Team are exploring options of potential Providers able to deliver support for Children aged 10-17 years (inclusive) and Vulnerable Adults aged 18 years and over whilst in police custody in a way that is collaborative and supportive across the four local authorities within South Yorkshire. Our Outcomes for children and vulnerable adults are as follows: • To receive support from an Appropriate Adult where eligible. • To be treated fairly with respect for their rights and entitlements. • Are supported to communicate effectively with the Police. • Are able to participate effectively in procedures related to the investigation and/or their detention. • Feel supported emotionally, and their rights are respected and protected i.e. against mockery, intimidation, fear, dehumanisation, bullying and isolation during police processes.
