T/RHH045/19 - STEP WP9 Task 1 - Waste Disposal and Decommissioning Optioneering

UKAEA wishes to initiate a contract to explore the processing, disposal and recycling solutions for waste materials that are likely to be generated during the nuclear operation of a STEP device. This will build upon the research-based waste assessment studies already performed by UKAEA as part of EUROfusion demonstration fusion power plant (‘DEMO’) studies but with a more engineering and technological focus. The project is aimed at guiding future STEP R&D, for example to indicate if the current “low-activation” constraints can be relaxed or if further mitigation steps are required in the design of STEP. The decommissioning plans for STEP should become part of the design phase and this contract will aim to deliver a prototype plan for a fusion device.
