United Utilities has a strategy of centralising the monitoring of its site-based assets for a number of AMPs. Primarily this is to provide alarms to the ICC so that the appropriate business response can be actioned for events on site. Telemetry outstations are part of the end-to-end infrastructure that facilitates these services. They collect data locally on a site – integrating into instrumentation and control systems – and service the Strategic Telemetry System (STS) within the ICC. Dependent on the site being monitored, outstations are required to provide the right level of scalability for the sites they are monitoring, and varying levels of intelligence to locally aggregate and disseminate plant data. As an integral part of the telemetry infrastructure, effective deployment of outstations on UU sites will provide the following ongoing business benefits to the ICC: - Mitigation of risks on UU sites by providing alerts of deviation from the normal operation - Provision of data that is used to demonstrate UU’s compliance with regulatory requirements - Provision of data that is used to feed into proactive monitoring and management planning systems Telemetry outstations are generally procured as small, medium or large assets - described as follows: - Small RTUs – Typically deployed on network pumping stations, service reservoirs, and small DPC applications. - Medium RTUs – Typically deployed on small treatment works, large pumping facilities and boreholes. - Large RTUs – Typically deployed on large treatment works and large network schemes. - Dedicated Pump Controller (DPC) – Typically deployed on network pumping stations, large private pumping stations and sewers for adoption pumping stations.
